Cut Luce at The Cliff, Canford Cliffs – a great place for a group celebration meal.

April 2026

We chose The Cliff in Canford Cliffs to celebrate my mum’s 80th birthday, and it turned out to be a great choice for a big family get‑together.

There were 20 of us in total, and we booked their semi‑private dining room, which worked brilliantly. It felt special without being completely cut off from the rest of the restaurant. There was plenty of space for everyone to sit comfortably, move around, do a bit and we also had a separate table for presents. It was the perfect size for our group. They advertise the space as seating up to 30 people or around 40 standing, and that definitely sounds right.

Originally, the restaurant suggested their Celebration Set Menu, which starts from £38 per person. While it looks lovely, my mum wasn’t overly keen, mainly because she felt there wasn’t enough choice for some of the men in the group. She had visions of fish and chips and burgers, which weren’t featured. I got in touch with The Cliff ahead of time, and they were incredibly accommodating. They said we could order from the à la carte menu instead, as long as everyone had a minimum of two courses. Since the à la carte menu included burgers and fish and chips, it suited everyone perfectly.

A few family members travelled down from Surrey for the weekend and stayed at The Canford, which is just a two‑minute walk away – super convenient and ideal when you’re celebrating and want a short stagger home. (I’ve written a separate full review of The Canford for anyone interested.)

For me personally, The Cliff has a bit of nostalgia attached to it. Many years ago, it was The Nightjar and used to be one of my local stomping grounds- I spent many a Friday night here shooting some pool. The transformation since then is impressive. The restaurant is now very smart, modern and welcoming, with deep, rich colours and really lovely furnishings. My mum said she likes eating there as the furnishings she felt made the acoustics work! Oddly enough (but always a good sign), three different people commented on how nice the toilets were, which says a lot about the attention to detail throughout.

Organising food pre‑orders for 20 people could have been painful, but it was actually pretty straightforward. I set up a WhatsApp group for everyone to send their choices, and the restaurant was very flexible – some people had a starter and main, others went for main and dessert, and it was all handled with no fuss at all.

On the day itself, service was spot‑on. Drinks were brought to the table, we weren’t rushed, and even though our booking was for 3 pm, we weren’t pushed to sit down immediately. Everything felt relaxed and unhurried, which was exactly what we wanted for a birthday celebration.

All the starters came out together and looked great — there were lots of positive comments around the table. These were cleared efficiently, and then the mains arrived, again all at the same time (which was something I’d been slightly worried about with such a large group). Portions were generous and everything looked really well presented. Several people commented on both the quality and the size of the meals.

I also loved the dessert options. They offer a mini dessert with a hot drink, and even better, a mini dessert with an after‑dinner cocktail, which felt like a really nice little extra. We were also allowed to bring our own birthday cake, which we had brought from Cake Box, and the team happily provided plates, napkins and forks for us.

There’s also a great outdoor area, which was busy thanks to the sunny weather. The Cliff is not dog-friendly unless you are outside; however, the team did allow us to bring our dog on the basis that she stayed in the private dining area at the back, which she did.

Dessert plates were a little slow to be cleared, but no one seemed to notice as everyone was mingling and enjoying themselves.

In terms of the practical details: they require a £10 per person deposit, pre‑orders 10 days in advance, and there’s a 10% service charge on pre‑booked food and drink. You can bring balloons and decorations, and they’re happy for you to provide your own cake.

Our final bill came in at around £1,000, which felt very reasonable given the number of people, the quality of the food, and how smoothly it was all handled.

All in all, I’d happily recommend The Cliff for a special occasion or a large group celebration. I was slightly nervous booking such a big table, worrying about food coming out in dribs and drabs or smaller portions – but they absolutely nailed it. Most importantly, my mum had a wonderful birthday, and everyone loved helping her celebrate, which is really what it’s all about.
