A Dog‑Friendly Pub with Rooms in Canford Cliffs
April 2026
We stayed at The Canford, a dog‑friendly pub with rooms in Canford Cliffs, while in town celebrating my mum’s 80th birthday. When we visit my folks in Poole we often stay at Hotel Du Vin on Poole Quay which we always love (check out my Hotel Du Vin Poole review). However, as the big birthday celebrations were at The Cliff (see my separate review) which was a 2 min walk from The Canford it made sense to book there.
My family is from Poole, and the Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs and Parkstone areas are just beautiful – coming back to my old stomping grounds always makes me feel incredibly sentimental.
Arrival & Pub Spaces
We arrived at around 1 pm, fully aware that the rooms wouldn’t yet be ready. I’d called earlier in the week and was told this would be the case, but also that we were very welcome to leave our bags with them.
The pub itself is lovely, with lots of different spaces to suit whatever mood you’re in. There’s a gorgeous outdoor garden with areas of both sun and shade, plus really cute sea‑hut‑style booths where we saw friends and couples cosied up, enjoying drinks or meals. Everything felt relaxed, sociable and very dog-friendly.
Inside, there’s a bright conservatory dining area, along with more informal spaces for eating, drinking or simply hanging out. It’s one of those places that works just as well for a local drink as it does for a longer stay.
Zach, the manager, checked us in and was genuinely lovely – welcoming and warm and taking his time explaining everything to me. Service throughout our stay was consistently friendly and easy.

Rooms
I booked three rooms, and we stayed in rooms numbered 1, 2, and 3, which gave us a great opportunity to compare categories. We booked a flexible rate with breakfast included.
Room #1 – Feature Boutique Room (myself and the Irishman) £279.90 (Left video)
Room #2 – Cosy Room (my nieces) £198.90 (Middle picture)
Room #3 – Boutique Room (my sister and her husband) £220.98 (Right video)
The Cosy Room (room #2) was, in my view, larger than expected. It had a cute little window alcove with a seating area, which the girls loved.
The Feature Boutique Room (room #1) had an instant wow factor. I’ll admit I partly justified booking it so I could review all three room categories (there is a 4th category ‘Bigger Boutique’ FYI) — I’ve mentioned in other reviews that I can always justify travel spend. Thankfully, the poor Irishman lets me get on with it with little judgment.
We’d been in Vienna the previous weekend, where an upgraded executive room was talked up but ultimately felt a bit… vanilla (check out my Vienna review). Walking into room #1 at The Canford was the complete opposite. It’s gorgeous — spacious, beautifully laid out and full of thoughtful, high‑quality details.
There’s a freestanding bath in the room, a double shower, and generous Bramley amenities throughout. I love this brand, and everything was there – pillow mist testers, diffusers, bubble bath, bath salts, hand and body lotion – all good quality rather than token gestures.
One of my favourite moments came early the next morning. At 7.15 am, our dog started pawing at The Irishman with real purpose – it was as if she knew she was only five minutes from the beach. He gave in and took her out, while I stayed behind and enjoyed a genuine time of relaxation. I put the kettle on, switched on the cute digital radio, and relaxed back into bed, doing a bit of work while lounging in one of the gorgeous robes provided. Blissful. This room genuinely made me feel gutted that we had to leave – and even more so that we weren’t staying another night.

Dog‑Friendly Done Properly
The Canford is exceptionally dog-friendly, and the dog setup in the room was as thoughtfully done as everything else. A proper dog bed, towel and goodies were laid out, plus the cutest little treat box containing:
a full roll of poo bags
a rabbit treat
cute doggy themed info cards
duck treats
and a “brew of the day” Earl Greyhound tea bag
It’s a small thing, but done so well — and it really made me smile- as it did the dog!
Breakfast
If you book breakfast as included, you start with a continental offering of croissants, pain au chocolat, toast, fruit and juices.
You can then order from a cooked breakfast menu, which includes, amongst other items:
a classic Full Monty
a veggie Full English option
smashed avocado on sourdough
eggs Benedict
eggs Florentine
We did have to wait quite a while for breakfast to arrive, even though it wasn’t overly busy (to be fair, there were nine of us, as another sister and the parents joined). The eggs were a little overdone, but we were all absolutely ravenous after a night of celebrations, and everything was very happily wolfed down.
One particularly entertaining moment summed up just how dog-friendly this place really is. Our waiter came over and asked whether we’d like to take them up on the offer of a breakfast sausage for resident dogs — would ours like one? OK then. She was promptly served before any of us, which was comical given how desperate we all were to eat. Normally, it’s the dog drooling over the hoomans’ food — this time it was very much the other way around.
Service at breakfast, as throughout the stay, was friendly and warm.
Location – Top Tips
- It’s a five‑minute walk to a Blue Flag beach- Canford Cliffs
- You can walk to Sandbanks or head the other way towards Bournemouth Pier if you fancy a longer stroll.
- You can see Old Harry Rocks — just beautiful
- Compton Acres is also very close, with 10 acres of stunning gardens, including an Italian garden, rock and water gardens, and a Japanese garden, plus a lovely café and tea rooms.
As we were leaving, we caught sight of the Sunday roasts coming out of the kitchen — and they looked AMAZING. My top tip would be to plan your stay around a Sunday and really make the most of the menu. They also run Sunday stay offers that include a contribution towards lunch, which feels like a no‑brainer.
Do ask about check‑in arrangements and whether a later 1pm check‑out is available. This seems to be offered on some direct bookings and/or room types and makes a big difference to how relaxed your stay feels.
Was this a good place to stay?
A warm, stylish, genuinely dog‑friendly hotel in Canford Cliffs, with beautifully designed rooms, an exceptional location near the coast, and lovely staff. Minor breakfast timing niggles aside, this is a place that feels thoughtful, relaxed and very easy to return to. Hope to stay again next time visiting the folks.
