Flat Iron- The Cut, Waterloo

It’s been ages since I’ve been “out out”, so even meeting the girls for a Saturday birthday lunch felt like an event. We started across the road at The Hope & Anchor on The Cut. If you’re a white wine drinker, I’d give it a miss – the choice wasn’t great. One quick drink later, we crossed over to Flat Iron, where the birthday girl had booked the four of us a table.

Flat Iron is exactly the kind of place that knows what it’s good at and sticks to it. The menu is tiny, but everything on it is nailed. You’re not here for endless choice; you’re here for steak and steak done properly.

The Menu: Small but Mighty

The headliner is, of course, the Flat Iron steak – and at £15, it’s one of the best-value plates in London. Other mains include a wagyu option, a cheeseburger, and a rump. Vegetarians can go for the roast aubergine from the sides list, which can be served as a main.

We didn’t overthink it.

Four flat irons, please.

Drinks: Surprisingly Great Value

Three of us went rogue on the red-meat-wine-pairing front and ordered a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It was delicious – perfectly chilled, gooseberry-rich, and honestly a steal at £33. The birthday girl went for a Passion Fruit Collins (£9), which also hit the mark.

Atmosphere: Bustling, Relaxed, Zero Pretence

The restaurant was buzzing in that lively-but-not-chaotic way. The walls are lined with old-fashioned butcher-style tiles, which adds character without trying too hard. I would say it’s not a date spot unless your idea of romance is shouting over the table, but it’s perfect for groups, catch-ups, and casual celebrations.

The Main Event

The steaks arrived on individual chopping boards with proper steak knives, in the form of a meat cleaver – a small detail, but appreciated. All four were cooked exactly as requested, beautifully seasoned, and genuinely delicious.

And then the sides.

Oh, the sides.

• Truffle mac ’n’ cheese

• Creamed spinach

• Green salad

• Beef dripping chips

All excellent, but the green salad deserves a special mention. Simple, crisp, perfectly dressed – the kind of thing you don’t expect to rave about, but finding myself doing so.

Conversation flowed, laughter rolled, and a second bottle of wine was ordered…

The Flat Iron Signature Freebie

We wanted to stay put; we were comfortable and chilled. However, when we tried to order another bottle of wine, we were told that they needed the table back. Disappointing, but in fairness, they were clear at the booking point that dining time is limited. The bill was delivered, and with it came mini meat cleavers, which you exchange at the Mr Whippy machine by the door. Super cute add-on.

Today’s flavour: Tahitian vanilla & brown butter. Served in a posh wafer cone with chocolate sprinkles.

I don’t have a sweet tooth, but wow. Wow! We stepped out onto The Cut, sun shining, ice creams in hand, and wandered off in search of our next drinks stop. A perfect little moment.

Top Tips Before You Book

Vegetarians & vegans– Flat Iron is not veggie-friendly. If someone in your group doesn’t eat meat or aubergine, this won’t be the best choice.

Kids– Only some Flat Iron locations offer a kids’ menu. If you’re bringing younger children, check ahead. My nieces (13 and 18) love Flat Iron, but they’re past the kids’ menu stage.

If you’re heading to Waterloo station afterwards, skip the tiny BrewDog by platforms 1–2. Walk to BrewDog in The Sidings — bigger, better, and worth the extra steps.

 CutLuce Verdict

Flat Iron on The Cut is one of the best-value, most consistently delicious steak restaurants in London. Perfect for groups, celebrations, and casual catch-ups. Excellent steak, brilliant sides, great wine prices, and that whimsical free ice cream moment that seals the deal.
